The Tabaco Church stood with a quiet resilience in the night, as if dutifully standing watch over the handful of people taking advantage of the cool evening air. Warm, buttery beams illuminated its ancient facade from below; shadows from nearby streetlamps formed tortuous patterns across its surface. That night was calm. A regular one as far as evenings go. Teenagers huddling in groups. A middle-aged woman carrying a large grocery bag hurrying to get home. A baby was crying somewhere. Cars were honking. Through it all, the church looked on, quiet and – for a brief moment – almost a little lonely.
